Exploring Cómpeta in Málaga

View of Competa, Spain

It feels a little strange to be sat at my laptop, typing away, after what seems like an absolute age. I’ve been a massive stranger to blogging this year but I’m hoping to get back into the swing of it now that everything is a little more settled.

What better way to kick things off than a write-up from my holiday to Spain back in June. Similar to our Spanish getaway two years ago with Mat’s family, we headed to the Málaga region again and hired a big villa for us all to stay in.

It was actually a big surprise for Mat’s dad for his 60th birthday, so he was pretty shocked when his two granddaughters (4 and 7) turned up at the airport to ask “Grandy, can we have a sleepover?” with their little suitcases packed!

Cómpeta is a small village located around an hour’s drive away from Málaga airport. We were staying in a villa in the hills between Cómpeta and Torrox, so it was only a short 10/15 minute drive away. Although be warned, the roads up to these parts from the coast are very very winding and not for unconfident drivers!

Whereas Nerja, down by the coast, is very touristy, Cómpeta is a little more remote and authentically Andalusian. With winding cobbled streets, friendly Spanish-speaking locals and beautiful sixteenth century church in the village’s centre, it makes for a lovely day out.

It was baking hot when we visited, so our day out was kept pretty brief, but we explored the streets and stopped for a drink in one of the bars in the village square. It’s honestly just one of those places where you can keep yourself entertained by people-watching.

The locals were very friendly and when we stopped for some photos on the stairs in the photo above, a cute little Spanish lady shouted “bonita, bonita!” at me. Or at Mat, who knows…

Finishing this off with photos of a cute dog and a little promise that I’m back in the blogging game. Next blog post… probably food-related (let’s stick to what I know!). I also have some random holiday footage that I still need to edit into some form of video, so stay tuned for that too!
